Plants adapt to harsh and extreme environments in exceptional ways. For example, northern plants produce higher levels of antioxidants to fight against drastic temperature changes and to maintain energy balance. The decoction of the inner bark of the Canadian hemlock tree was traditionally used by several native North American Indian tribes for the treatment of eczema and other skin conditions. It was considered to have soothing, purifying and wound healing properties.
