Active Packaging Aims to Reduce Use of Cosmetic Preservatives

A new packaging project conducted by a European consortium tackles product shelf life by incorporating antioxidant preservatives into the packaging itself, rather than the cosmetic product contained inside.

The technology reportedly lowers the overall usage of preservatives in the cosmetic products without hindering performance. To date, the packaging has been developed for face cream, sun lotion and shampoo.

According to the researchers, the use of preservatives in cosmetics can be reduced by 25% to 40% at this stage.

Prototypes reportedly employ PET, PE and PP.

The European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, development and demonstration is funding the project, dubbed Acticospack.

The consortium partners for the project include Fraunhofer Gesellschaft of Germany; Packaging, Transport & Logistics Research Center and Española de Nuevos Tratamientos S.A.of Spain; LAMEPLAST S.P.A. and INDUPLAST S.P.A. of Italy; and GEPACK, SA of Portugal.
