Pack Manufacturing News, Foam Options, and More Beauty Packaging News and Launches for Mid April 2014

Specialty packaging and folding carton provider Bert-Co installed a new rigid box line to support the rising demand of rigid box orders. The company invested in an Emmeci fully automated rigid box line along with laminators, mitering equipment and other finishing equipment, further enhancing its ability to be a full-service supplier to its luxury goods customer base. The new equipment will be installed in the company’s Pulaski, Tennessee, location—helping satisfy consumers who are interested in packaging made in the U.S.

Evolve Capital completed an investment in Inline Filling Systems, LLC. Established in 1997, Inline Filling Systems is a manufacturer of liquid filling and bottling equipment serving the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, beverage and chemical industries. This recent investment complements Evolve Capital's previous investment in Meheen, a manufacturer of filling and bottling equipment for carbonated beverages. The two companies will maintain current management personnel and be able to provide a full system solution to domestic and international manufacturers of liquid products from locations based on both coasts of the U.S. Inline Filling Systems has had sustained growth for several years and is currently looking for larger facilities in the Venice, Florida, area to support future plans.

Avery Dennison Materials Group appointed Jeroen Diderich to the role of vice president, global marketing. In this position, Diderich will be responsible for the business’s end user and converter marketing strategies, as well as product management across the company’s label and packaging materials and graphics solutions business segments.

New Launches

Qosmedix added two new white latex-free polyurethane foam trapezoid shaped makeup sponges to its offerings. Individually wrapped and available in two different sizes, including a Thick Sponge and a Slim Sponge, these unique shaped sponges make it easy to apply product to hard-to-reach areas such as underneath the eyes, and the pack separates into twelve individual sponges.

TricorBraun introduced a new lightweight, low-profile tube and closure solution through a partnership with Silgan Tubes. The unique, snap-on tube head weighing as much as 30% less than a similar-sized traditional tube heads, and TricorBraun also has the exclusive rights in North America to Italian closure manufacturer Giflor range of products. Giflor developed a new, eco low-profile flip top closure that weighs less than a similar-diameter traditional closure. The resulting Eco low-profile tube/closure solution is a minimum of up to 30% lighter than traditional combinations holding the same volume of product. It is well suited for beauty and personal care products such as skin care, sun care, cosmetics and hair care products, as well as baby care and health and hygiene products such as ointments, salves and insect repellent.

Albéa announced its latest patented foam technology, EZ’R. In a form that works well for a variety of applications, including facial care, baby care, shampoos and shower gels, sun care and more, the EZ’R was conceived with a snap-on, flip-top cap and is designed for a one-step filling process. For a greater on-shelf differentiation, EZ’R provides a range of design possibilities for the bottles and flip-top caps, and the EZ’R also allows reducing water consumption and packaging size. Additionally, Albéa unveiled its new family of four fiber brushes named My Style. The new fibers are designed to capture the ever-changing lifestyle modes of today’s women on the go, and they include the Mademoiselle (for extreme volume and length), the Miss (for extra curl and length), the Lolita (for volume and definition) and the Signorina (for extra volume).

Aptar Beauty + Home launched a new personal care dispenser called the GS Affinity Showerproof. It helps offer product protection with Aptar’s new, patented Lip Seal Technology coupled with a metal-free product pathway for optimum protection against contamination. The GS Affinity Showerproof also has a unique, two-piece closure design that provides multiple color opportunities, and brands can choose among multiple actuator design options to further distinguish their packaging. GS Affinity Showerproof has two dosage sizes available works well for body care, hair care, baby care and personal cleansing applications.

Anticipating the continued growth of mini product programs, Mega Airless debuted new family of ultra-mini, top-fill solutions, packed with high-performance features – the Nano. Ideal for sampling, cross-promotional product sets, on-the-go products, and cosmetic applications where pinpoint precision of application, the Nano packs are available in 5, 10 and 15 ml volumes with a 0.2 ml dosage, and each 22.5 mm-diameter Nano is designed for easy filling on high-speed lines. Also, the Nano is completely customizable, with a variety of colors and decorative techniques such as silk-screening, labeling and hot-stamping.

Colep launched its Natural Foaming Cream with CO2 packaging, a new, NaTrue-certified, organic aerosol cream that has foaming properties as a result of an incorporation of CO2 into the formulation using a unique mixing technology. The pack utilizes Colep’s new Bag-on-Valve system, which uses compressed air as the propellant, with CO2 directly added to the formulation, creating a gentle foaming cream. The product is easily absorbed into the skin and therefore creates many potential applications.

The Zest is a new bottle shape created by M&H Plastics in three sizes designed to take the same snap-on flip-top cap with a colored cap insert. Manufactured in HDPE/BMPP, Zest bottles are available in 200, 250 and 400 ml. In addition there is a 400 ml PET version and other sizes can be easily developed from the preform. The snap-on flip top cap is available with the option of a colored cap insert giving the opportunity for range differentiation more cost effectively. The flip-top cap comes with an active hinge, enabling the user to open the closure and dispense product with just one hand. Also, the flat flip-top cap also means these bottles can be inverted to use as tottles, and the distinctive, softly curved lines add a premium look to any product while range story can be created by selecting different colored bottles, caps and cap inserts.

New on the Shelves

French makeup brand Bourjois selected Albéa’s injected plastic Dolce Vita mascara brush and pack solution to help differentiate its latest product, Beauty’Full Volume Dark Khôl. Dolce Vita, the newest member of Albéa’s hollow family, is designed to act like a formula reservoir and its doubly curved, hourglass brush shape provides curling powerwith staggered rows of bristles that tease lashes and push them up.

Walmart brand Equate Beauty Self Tan Bronzing Spray and Self Tan Flawless Legs Spray both are packaged in the Bag On Valve System from Aptar Beauty + Home, and the products also use Aptar’s XL200 accessory with a Verifine insert, while the Equate Beauty Self Tan Bronzing Lotion is topped with Aptar’s Ibis dispenser. The Coppertone Sport High Performance AccuSpray Suncreen also uses the Aptar Bag On Valve System and the Simplicity Twist-To-Lock accessory, and the Malibu Tan Hemp Golden Glow Bronzing Moisturizer uses the Bag On Valve system paired with the Moritz Twist-To-Lock accessory. The Renpure Advanced BB Crème Shampoo and Conditioner also use the Bag On Valve and the Allegra accessory, the Biosilk Silk Therapy Silk Mousse is dispensed through the sculptured Aspire Locking Mousse accessory and VX valve from Aptar, and the Michael Jordan Flight Sport Men's Body Spray and Michael Jordan Flight Men’s Body Spray use the Moritz accessory on a VX valve.

Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, manufacturer of Jane Iredale–The Skin Care Makeup, unveiled new product packaging and a new logo treatment. Characterized by a fresh layout, inviting colors and textures, integrated QR code technology and environmentally responsible materials, the packaging symbolizes the brand’s future and complements its 20th anniversary this year. The new packaging uses clean, bright, optimistic colors to capture the essence, mood and feeling of the Jane Iredale brand. One of the colors chosen for the logo is Radiant Orchid, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2014, and the soft gray color chosen for the font appears more soft and feminine than the ubiquitous black typeface. Also, the embossed treatment of the logo and soft touch of the carton add textural elements that pop from the shelf and feel luxurious in the hand. And reflecting the brand’s commitment to the environment, the paper used is fully recyclable and sourced from renewable resources. The ink uses natural tree resin systems and vegetable oils to reduce volatile organic compounds by over 75%, and the ink is also UV curable, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and overall environmental impact.
