In the personal care industry, the imperative to cut costs has combined with the development of alternative preservative methods to produce a wide variety of interesting new combinations. One of the first companies to focus on this recent trend in multifunctional additives to improve preservation was schülke.
schülke introduced ethylhexylglycerin to the personal care industry in 1991 as sensiva® SC 50. Initially introduced as a substitute for triclosan in deodorant products, the fragrance-boosting and fixing abilities of this material were soon discovered. In recent testing, these attributes were proven in a series of tests comparing various fragrance components and compounded fragrances, both alone and in formulation. For many fragrances/fragrance components, sensiva® SC 50 was found to both boost the fragrance and allow it to stay on the skin longer. This was particularly true for milder fragrances. As fragrances are usually the most expensive components in a formulation, the addition of sensiva® SC 50 allows the formulator to use less fragrance for the same effect, saving resources and money.

It has long been known that sensiva® SC 50 can improve the skin-feel of products, while also improving the efficacy of the preservatives in the system. In a series of tests comparing an emulsion containing eight percent glycerin, with and without sensiva® SC 50, this material was shown to significantly reduce tackiness, soaping and greasiness, while improving the overall impression of the product.
Ethylhexylglycerin reliably inhibits the growth and multiplication of odor-causing bacteria, while at the same time not affecting beneficial skin flora. It has also been shown to improve the efficacy of many traditional preservatives, as well as other multifunctional materials. Paired with phenoxyethanol (euxyl® PE 9010) or methylisothiazolinone (euxyl® K 220), ethylhexylglycerin produces a broad-spectrum, liquid preservative system that is globally approved and improves the sensory characteristics of the finished product. This effect is heightened when ethylhexylglycerin is combined with other multifunctional materials. In combination with the skin-moisturizing caprylyl glycol, as in sensiva® SC10, the skin-moisturizing effect was shown to be double that of a similar multifunctional caprylyl glycol blend.
