Naturex announced the acquisition of a majority stakes in ChileBotanics, a Chilean company that specialized in the production and marketing of quillaja extracts. This investment, for approximately $3 million, offers Naturex an additional base in Latin America, access to quillaja resources and a solid positioning as a specialist underpinned by the strong local management involvement.

Sabinsa began construction on a new continuous extraction facility that will increase production capacity by 200%.The new manufacturing facility will be next door to the company's existing continuous extraction facility in Dobaspet, India. The facility represents a $5 million investment and will cover 75,000 square feet. It will include a 15,000-square-foot downstream facility, a microbiology lab and a 45,000-square-foot warehouse. The facility is expected to be complete in mid-2014.
Evonik’s Personal Care Business is participating at the Cosmetagora event in Paris organized by the Société Française de Cosmetologie. It is showcasing its new Men’s Care concept, which encompasses a consumer survey covering market insights on male grooming routines, as well as the implementation of scientific studies on male skin and the development of formulations just for men; Tego Care PBS 6, an eco-friendly emulsifier based on polyglyceryl technology that allows the formulation of modern sun care products; and Sphingony, a naturally occuring sphingoid base that has demonstrated benefits in reducing hair loss due to increasing the fraction of hair in the anagen growth phase. Additionally, Evonik Corporation has successfully completed its merger with Evonik Goldschmidt Corporation.
Sederma launched Vegesome Moist 24, a naturally encapsulated long-term moisturizer for cosmetic powders. Through its use of natural plant capsules, the ingredient allows powder formulas to utilize the moisturizing power of Moist 24, which, even in the short term, has been found to measurably and visibly improve dry skin. The stable and moisturizing powder, which allows the formulation of a water-soluble active ingredient (Imperata cylindrica extract) in powder makeup formulations such as loose powder, blush and eye shadow, is made up of a vegetal extract loaded in hollow particles of natural origin exine.
Seppic is launching SepiClear G7, a 100% natural and sustainable solubilizer targeting the cosmetics market. SepiClear G7 is a concentrated, non-ionic surfactant that is readily biodegradable, obtained in compliance with the 12 green chemistry principles. It is derived from sugar and castor seeds, with sources 100% of vegetal origin (certified by the Association Chimie du Végétal). SepiClear G7 solubilizes lipophilic compounds, notably essential oils, perfumes and vitamin E, in aqueous media. Unlike other natural solubilizers, it does not produce foam, which is a fundamental point in formulating cosmetic products such as toners, toiletries and aqueous gels. The product has, moreover, already won the Pierre Potier prize, awarded in recognition of innovation in sustainable chemistry.
Botaneco announced Dr. Jack Guth passed away on November 28, 2013, after a short battle with a rare bone marrow disorder. Guth served as Botaneco's vice president of R&D for the past seven years, and is credited with developing the Oleosome technology. According to the company, Guth was an inspiration to everyone he met, and was well recognized in the industry for his deep knowledge of chemistry and formulations. Having begun his career at Johnson & Johnson, he later served the industry from the supplier side at Lonza, Inolex and Botaneco. He understood the industry from all aspects, including ingredient development, production, research and marketing. In addition to his wife of 46 years, he is survived by his two children.
Innospec hired John Bozza as Southeast regional sales manager for its performance chemicals division. In this role, Bozza will be responsible for continual development of the Innospec range of personal care products.
Spectra Colors announced the addition of a new sales account manager in Julie Barone. Barone will cover account for the Northeast U.S. for Spectra Colors.
The personal care business of AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry added Hoda Nahas as sales and marketing manager in Brazil. In this capacity, she is responsible for identifying prospective new customers, monitoring emerging trends and challenges for existing customers, and strategic development of the sales and promotion of AkzoNobel technologies for the hair care, skin care and sun care sectors of the personal care market in Brazil.
