Anniversaries, Awards, Investments and More Beauty Ingredient News and Launches for Late March 2013

Coast Southwest is celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary serving the personal care, surfactant, and silicone markets in Texas. It also recently acquired a new 30,000-square-foot facility in Arlington, Texas, to accommodate the increasing demand for the company’s products and services. The new site will house local customer service, a regional sales office, warehousing and an innovation center.

Biosil Technologies appointed Azelis Canada as the exclusive distributor of Biosil’s line of specialty silicone complexes and marine derived actives in Canada.

AkzoNobel’s patented Zeta Fraction technology was one of the recipients of a 2013 China Personal Care & Cosmetics Innovation Award, under the category of Most Innovative Formulating & Processing Technology. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony held on March 13, in Guangzhou, China, during the 2013 Personal Care and Homecare Ingredients (PCHi) trade show.

Additionally, AkzoNobel has announced its intention to invest a further €65 million in China. The investment will be used to boost capacity and improve operational excellence at AkzoNobel’s Surface Chemistry manufacturing sites in Boxing and Ningbo. More than half the money is being invested in the company’s facility in Shandong province, which was taken over as part of the acquisition of Boxing Oleochemicals in January 2012. As well as building a multipurpose reactor to expand local production capacity for amines, funds are also being made available to align HSE practices at the site with the rest of AkzoNobel. In Ningbo, a new alkoxylation unit will be built, bringing the total investment at the multi-site close to the €400 million mark. As part of the investment decision, AkzoNobel will exit the merchant fatty acid business in Boxing, closing down two out of three fatty acid plants at the site, affecting about 200 employees.

Oxiteno started to produce specialty chemicals for the personal care market in Pasadena, Texas. The start-up of the Pasadena site is an important milestone for Oxiteno, as it reaffirms its commitment to the U.S. market and strengthens its position and product portfolio for the NAFTA region. In the coming months, new capacity in surfactants will be added to the site to further support its business expansion in various markets, and in addition to the current capacity of ethoxylates, Oxiteno will invest another $ 100 million in the NAFTA region during the next 18 months to expand its production capacity by 100,000 tons per year in Pasadena and in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico.

NuSil Technology presented CareSil, a new business unit in silicone materials for skin care, and its namesake line of silicones for this industry, designed first and foremost to help care for skin. CareSil combines NuSil’s silicone expertise and personalized customer service to deliver medical-quality silicones that meet the needs of skin care applications, including moisturizers, sunscreens, skin repair products, anti-wrinkle lotions and beyond.

Clariant is debuting its Secret Code of Beauty for the first time at in-cosmetics 2013, inviting attendees to explore the perfect combination of unique codes and how it can benefit them. Additionally, Clariant will unveil new products for skin and hair care at the event, and it also is a sponsor of the Innovation Seminar and Clariant’s Dr. Henrike Neuhoff, head of global competence center personal care, will present the newest innovation in polymers designed to promote a soft-velvet skin feel.

Also at in-cosmetics 2013, Indena is presenting a collection of different formulations that address the skin's during the four seasons differently with botanical active ingredients. This new concept aims at showing that different needs of the skin, originating both from different external environmental conditions and individual skin peculiarities, may be addressed by blending botanical active ingredients. All active ingredients are standardized and clinically tested and have been used in formulations designed not only for their active content, but also specifically realized to best meet the needs of skin, all year round. This formulation concept involves Bosexil, an olibanum extract formulated with a phospholipid-based technology that achieves soothing and anti-photoaging efficacy on skin.

Induchem is releasing its counterpart for collagen and elastin: Neodermyl. According to the company, this active ingredient offers the same results within 15 days as an injection of a collagen filler: approximately 15% of wrinkle depth reduction. The active ingredient is being highlighted in a new marketing concept, the S3D EE Cream (energy-enhancing cream), a night cream that boosts the restructuring of the extracellular matrix during sleep.

Oat Cosmetics will introduce both Ecocert natural-certified and sterile grades of its colloidal oatmeal at in-cosmetics 2013 in Paris. Oat Com EUR is a colloidal oatmeal with skin-enhancing properties that is Ecocert/COSMOS natural-certified to be used in the European market. It is recommended as an active skin-enhancing base for creams and lotions. Oat Com IRR is a sterile version of colloidal oatmeal for use in clinical and OTC-type formulations.
