Chemsil Acquisition, Expansions, and More Beauty Ingredient News and Launches for Early September 2013

Innospec Inc. announced that it acquired Chemsil Silicones and the Chemtec Chemical Co. from its private owners. Chemsil will become part of Innospec’s Performance Chemicals business, which develops and markets a range of surfactants and emollients to the personal care industry, and Chemtec will continue to operate as a key distributor in this market.

Evonik opened its newly expanded plant for the production of premium raw materials, additives and ingredients for the cosmetic and household care industries in a ceremony in Bekasi, Indonesia. With this investment, Evonik is increasing its capacity for surfactants and esters used in hair care, skin care and industrial applications.

To help its customers better understand hair damage, Croda has launched an updated, iPad-friendly version of its interactive, electronic Hair Damage Guide that explores the various types of hair damage, how each occurs and how these can be duplicated in a laboratory setting to test the efficacy of new product technologies.

Additionally, Croda added its Natra Gem EW emulsifier ingredient to its Sensification kit.

Identifying new trends and unique approaches to beauty manufacturing, enhancing end-customer awareness of safe and up-to-date developments, as well as promoting cosmetics in the Russian and CIS market—these were the goals of the first BASF Care Creations Awards. Research specialists from BASF assessed the technical parameters of innovative formulations and ingredients and also, together with local consumers, took into account caring aspects such as textures, smell and the colors of cosmetics products. Eighteen winners from Russia and CIS beauty manufacturers were awarded.

Clariant held its Capital Markets & Media Day in New York on July 11, 2013, its first such event in the U.S., to share its performance, goals and basic strategies with trade and business press. The company highlighted its shift from chemistry/technology driven company to a customer driven one, and noted that personal care is one of the most promising areas of growth for the company—in fact, its among the areas for prioritized growth investments. The U.S., the company stated, is its single most important market (in terms of total sales), and the Clariant sees it as critical to the company’s growth. Also, although it sees growth in China slowing over the next few years, Clariant will continue investing in China, through both manufacturing and R&D facilities. Additionally, it is making investments in regional markets of Southeast Asia and shifting selected competence centers to Asia. In some cases, as in Indonesia, Clariant is following its large global customers. In addition to the U.S. and Asia, Clariant sees enormous potential for growth in Eastern Europe, and has noted investments by its large customers in Africa.

Impact Colors debuted Color Trends 2015+, a presentation of color and color effects in the personal care industry for 2015 and beyond, created in association with Antoinette van den Berg of Future-Touch. Color Trends 2015+ frames in the future in five themes: Brilliance, Two-tones, Multi-colors, Faux Nature and Men.

IMCD Group acquired a majority interest in Makeni Chemicals, a specialty chemical distributor in Brazil. The Medrano founding family will keep a minority interest in the business, with Reinaldo Medrano continuing as managing director of the company. Makeni represents world-class suppliers and covers a wide range of market sectors including coatings, construction, adhesives and plastics, nutrition and personal care.

NuSil Technology—parent company of CareSil silicones for skin care, color cosmetics and sun care—announced it is now contracted with Azelis for the distribution of CareSil in France, Italy, Benelux and Canada.

Brookfield Engineering announced the release of RheocalcT Software delivering total control of both instrument and test parameters. RheocalcT gives the operator the ability to fully automated viscosity testing from a dedicated PC when using the new DV3T Touch Screen Rheometer and the new DV2T Touch Screen Viscometer.

Bioscreen Testing Services announced Gary Croft as its new business development manager. Croft brings over 26 years of experience in pharmaceutical, OTC, device and personal care commercialization to BioScreen, as well as worldwide business development and leadership skills. Before joining BioScreen, he was at Merz Pharmaceuticals and more recently with The Aesthetics Group, an aesthetics and dermatology consulting company. Croft also led the sales organization for OrthoNeutrogena Aesthetics (Johnson & Johnson) in the U.S. and Canada and has held a variety of positions in sales, marketing, new product development and business development with Medicis, GlaxoSmithkline and Aventis.
