Chemsil Silicones introduced a new cationic emulsion for hair care applications. Emulsil CC-44 is a highly engineered emulsion of amodimethicone, and in keeping with the latest regulatory directives, Emulsil CC-44 utilizes a preservative system that does not release formaldehyde and is paraben free. It helps provide improved deposition of active ingredients across the entire hair shaft, resulting in improved conditioning, frizz control, softness, wet and dry comb.

Silab developed Prohyal+, an anti-wrinkle active ingredient. Rich in yeast oligosaccharides from Mexican blue agave leaves, Prohyal+ is a powerful, durable ingredient for any anti-aging beauty product as it acts on the endogenous synthesis of hyaluronic acid. It increases the expression of hyaluronan synthase (HAS2) synthesis enzyme and reactivates the natural mechanisms of hyaluronic acid production which naturally declines during aging, while also treating the signs of age to reinforce youthful-looking skin that is more hydrated and smoothed and wrinkles are reduced.

AkzoNobel Global Personal Care launched Structure PQ-37 rheology modifiers. These new versatile, multifunctional conditioning polymers are designed to enhance the aesthetics, sensory attributes and performance benefits of a wide range of hair conditioning, hair styling, sun care and skin care products. Structure PQ-37M is a cationic acrylic homopolymer dispersed in cosmetic-grade white mineral oil, while Structure PQ-37P is a cationic acrylic homopolymer dispersed in a mixture of the propylene glycol diesters of caprylic and capric acids. Versatile and easy-to-use, they are ideally suited for the formulation of high-performing rinse-off and leave-on conditioners, creams, lotions, cosmetics, sun care products, after-sun products, hand sanitizers, wipes, styling aids, skin care gels, and after-shave products.

A program to develop a certified coconut oil supply chain to enhance sustainability and improve the livelihoods of 2,500 coconut growers in the Philippines has been launched as the result of a partnership between the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), BASF and Cargill. The partnership is co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through its program develoPPP.de. The certified coconut oil supply chain program focuses on smallholder coconut growers in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. It aims to raise farmers’ incomes by improving productivity and coconut oil quality. It also will introduce the Sustainable Agricultural Network standards as a basis for Rainforest Alliance Certification for coconut production.

DKSH Business Unit Performance Materials announced considerable growth in the beauty and personal care industry in the U.S. with new partnerships and the expansion of its sales force. Clariant and DKSH recently decided to expand their existing collaboration in Asia and join forces in the U.S. In addition, DKSH and Bluestar Silicones entered into a North American alliance that includes distribution to selected key accounts and regional distribution arrangements. Also, IBR extended the existing relationship with DKSH and appointed it to distribute its actives to a selected key account in the U.S.

Univar opened a personal care and household and industrial cleaning laboratory in Dubai. The facility will see Univar’s specialist dedicated technical team create finished products and new concepts for customer evaluation, as well as give its customers access to a large database of new formulations from its range of beauty and household and industrial cleaning products, strengthen Univar’s global network of technical experts, and offer further technical services to suppliers who may require laboratory capabilities in the Middle East.

Van Horn, Metz & Company, Inc. (VHM) acquired the Thornley Company. For VHM, the acquisition brings with it a recognized presence in the beauty and personal care, pharmaceutical, agricultural and water treatment markets. VHM will consolidate all operations from Thornley into its Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, headquarters.

Lonza announced membership in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), an international organization of growers, processors, traders, non-governmental organizations, investors, retailers and consumer goods manufactures working together to ensure that uses of palm oil are managed sustainably. By joining this group Lonza is making a commitment to support the RSPO initiatives and the sustainability of palm oil.

R.T. Vanderbilt Company, Inc. is announcing business changes for 2013. To support the future growth and focus of the company, the company is reorganizing its North American operations around three new wholly owned subsidiaries. The new operating organizations will align the key customer facing functions (sales, customer service, technical support and supply chain) under new business leaders to deliver more focused efforts on their respective markets and customer results. R. T. Vanderbilt Holding Company, Inc. is the new parent company for all wholly owned subsidiaries listed below; Vanderbilt Chemicals LLC is the new operating entity that will include the North American operations of the company’s manufactured and resale chemical business serving the rubber, plastics and petroleum markets; and Vanderbilt Minerals LLC is a new operating entity that will include the North American operations of the company’s industrial and specialty minerals business serving the life sciences, coatings, ceramics and agricultural markets.

IMCD Group acquired 100% of the shares of Chemimpo South Africa Pty., Ltd. through its subsidiary IMCD South Africa. The acquisition will further establish IMCD Group's position in South Africa. Integration of the two companies will take place in 2013, and the new combined operation will have approximately 90 employees. Chemimpo South Africa is headquartered in Johannesburg but also has branches in Cape Town and Durban.

Sun Chemical released its 2012 Sustainability Report, which showcases Sun Chemical’s achievements in eco-efficiency through established data-driven metrics, as well as examples of how raw material suppliers are contributing to the company’s environmental footprint. The report describes a balanced scorecard approach that Sun Chemical uses to assess suppliers’ environmental performance and provides details about questionnaires that were sent to suppliers asking about their sustainability policies, carbon footprint emissions, the potential impact on deforestation and so on.

Clariant achieved ISO 22716 Cosmetics Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification for its cosmetics ingredients site in Tangerang, Indonesia. The site is the eighth Clariant location to be endorsed with the cosmetics industry reference standard. This accomplishment reinforces the company’s ongoing commitment to support the beauty and personal care sector with globally consistent products and processes. Awarded by the Swiss Association for Quality Management Systems, the global ISO 22716 Cosmetics GMP ensures deliverance of highest quality products and production standards by the cosmetics sector, and also fulfills EU guidelines for cosmetics production.

Baris Kan joined Safic-Alcan Turkey as business development manager of the newly created Life Sciences department. In this position, Kan will implement and supervise Safic-Alcan’s strategy of growth in the department while establishing and leading the department. He will also manage the supplier and customer relations as well as business development strategy throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Caucasia, Balkan regions and Stan countries while bringing his knowledge and experiences in technical, sales, marketing and management.

Greentech expanded its scientific team with two additions—Rachida Nachat-Kappes, PhD, and Dojeanny Leng. Both will be in charge of specific requests from customers and will particularly contribute to the development of active ingredients. Nachat-Kappes has joined the company as R&D project manager, and Leng has joined the company as junior project manager.
