, a strategic consulting company specializing in the salon industry, released its proprietary 2007 Professional Salon Industry Haircare Study, indicating an overall salon industry growth of 4.2% and a hair care products category growth of 3.8%.
Key findings show that salons like Ulta and Beauty Brands now consume 13.5% of all salon products. Direct sales to salons boast 12.4% of salon industry profits, including brands such as Aveda, Wella International, Kerastase and more. However, L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble Professional Care and John Paul Mitchell Systems rank as the top three manufacturers in the salon hair care market, with Zotos International, The Estée Lauder Companies and Colomer following as the next biggest companies.
The study also found that salon hair service revenues have increased due to booth-rental salons, which has impacted chain salons negatively but has propelled sales for open-line products from beauty supply stores. Speciality products rather than basic products like shampoos and conditioners have garnered more revenue due to mass-retail brands and diversion. Hair color, in particular, experienced 5.6% growth.
