A new Canadean’s foresight report, "The Future of the Haircare Market in France, to 2017," found shampoo was the largest category in the French hair care market in terms of both value (30.3%) and volume (43.8%) in 2012. And the category is forecast to see a value CAGR of 1.2% to 2017, with volume growth just below the sector average at 1%.
The second-largest category in value terms was hair colorants, suggesting that consumers continue to want to color their hair despite the financial constraints. Now they use hair colorants as an alternative to the salon.
In volume terms, conditioners was the second-largest category.
The smallest category in French hair care in 2012 was perms and relaxers, with just 3.1% and 2.8% of value and volume. The category will see value growth above the sector average over 2012–2017, at a CAGR of 1.3% and volume netting a CAGR of 1.1%, in line with the sector.
These growth levels were mirrored by the conditioners and styling agents categories. This suggests that, in the years to 2017, French consumers will continue to experiment with different colurs and styles.
Additionally, the French hair care market will witness some growth over the coming years, according to the Canadean report. The sector is forecast to witness a relatively slow CAGR of 1.2% in terms of value to 2017. Volume growth is expected to be marginally smaller (1.1%), caused by the after-effects of the Euro crisis. However, all hair care categories are forecast to grow both in terms of value and volume to 2017, as consumers still need to wash, style and color their hair.
