Standards Launched for Organic Personal Care Certification

A group of industry stakeholders—including L'Oréal, The Estée Lauder Companies, Cognis and Aveda—launched OASIS: Organic And Sustainable Industry Standards for personal care. The key points are as follows:

  • 85% organic content in finished products required (to be ramped up to 95% after an unspecified interval)
  • limited amount of green chemistry defined here
  • petroleum chemistry is not allowed

OASIS set the standards based on a lack of a unified regulatory seal. According to founding member Tim Kapsner, "We believe it will become an internationally recognized standard, and will be regarded as the seal that represents sustainable and organic manufacturing."

An interview with Kapsner and founding member Karl Halpert (Private Label Select) will be available in GCI magazine's May issue.
