While the "week six slump" is traditional during the holiday season, The NPD Group reported that this year's slump was 7% lower than that of 2016, in terms of dollar sales.

Despite the slump, prestige beauty, specifically facial skin care, was the week's leader. NPD's chief industry advisor, Marshal Cohen, attributed this to "an implied focus on self-gifting with makeup, skin care and innovative products for the home leading Holiday 2017."

Update: Across the industries NPD tracks weekly, beauty led growth various weeks over the holiday season, including the week of Thanksgiving/Black Friday. Among the top sellers were sets and kits for skin care and home fragrance, and false eyelashes and lip gloss for makeup. Fragrance juices were the season’s top sales by dollar, with makeup and skin care following.
