Everywhere you look, the trend toward natural raw materials for personal care products is growing. Many consumers feel that natural materials are healthier for themselves and the environment. Numerous plants and other naturally-occurring materials have historically been used for their medicinal or beauty-enhancing properties. However, Mother Nature is fickle—droughts, frosts and other vagaries of the environment may alter these properties and material availability from year to year. Relying completely on nature can cause a finished product to be very unreliable and costly.

“Nature-identical”

“Nature-identical” materials offer a way to harness the best of nature without relying on Mother Nature to be kind. These materials are synthetic versions of the same chemistries found in nature, and because they are synthetic, they can be reliably replicated from year-to-year and batch-to-batch. This is particularly important for preservatives. Any variability in the properties or concentration of a preservative could cause a product to become more easily contaminated, compromising formulas and possibly risking the health of the consumer.

schülke’s sensiva® PA 20 is based on “nature-identical” phenethyl alcohol. Phenethyl alcohol occurs widely in nature and can be found in many essential oils—including rose, carnation and hyacinth. It is used as a fragrance component and has a mild rose odor. It also has properties that make it an excellent choice to help maintain the microbiological stability of personal care formulas. This activity is boosted in sensiva® PA 20 by pairing phenethyl alcohol with ethylhexylglycerin. Ethylhexylglycerin is similar to a class of chemicals that occur naturally in the liver of certain sea creatures. Being synthetically derived, ethylhexylglycerin maintains all of the beneficial preservative-boosting and moisturizing properties of these materials, without harming any living creatures.

Sustainable

Of course, even “natural” may not be good for the environment if the natural materials are not harvested and processed sustainably. All schülke products are produced in an environment that promotes sustainability as a key corporate policy. The schülke “Sustainability Report 2008 and Environmental Statement” documents how environmental consciousness can successfully become an integral part of the corporate philosophy of a chemical company/ingredient supplier.

A corporate philosophy of sustainability must be based on a total quality concept. This encompasses a vast array of dimensions, including: workplace safety, environmental management, leadership and cooperation. It also includes the quality of products and their effectiveness in formulas. Raw material, supplier, manufacturer and formula must work in unison to provide the consumer with a product that can truly be considered “sustainable”

Biodegradability

Synthetic preservatives that are safe, consistently effective and manufactured in a sustainable manner should also be biodegradable to truly be safe for the environment. Many of schülke's euxyl® preservative blends and all of the sensiva® preservative boosters are biodegradable, as well as being produced sustainably. All of these are globally-approved, eliminating the wasted time, energy and resources involved in formulating different versions of the same formula because of differing regulatory approvals.

Ensure your formulas are better than natural – make sure they are sustainable and biodegradable as well as dependable and efficient. Make sure they include sensiva® or euxyl® preservatives from schülke.
