Ingredients from NYSCC Suppliers' Day and More Beauty Ingredient News and Launches for Early May 2013

Experts from Lipotec, a subsidiary of Lubrizol, were recently featured on Lifetime Television's The Balancing Act TV program for its advances in developing anti-aging skin care solutions. The segment, which aired on April 25 and can be viewed here, featured Lipotec's contributions to the beauty industry, highlighting its Argireline peptide, one of the most successful active ingredients launched in the beauty market.

AAK Personal Care received NPA (Natural Product Association) certification for three ingredients from its performance emollients group. Lipex Sheasoft, Lipex Cocoasoft and Lipex Genova are created with AAK technology, deliver improved moisturization, have a high degree of temperature and crystallization stability, are easy to formulate, and are now certified natural by the NPA.

IMCD Group opened an office in Bangkok, Thailand. The company has been rapidly expanding in Asia-Pacific in the last few of years and has significantly strengthened its presence in the region. The Bangkok office in Bangkok employs staff four members, covering the personal care and food market sectors.

Symrise reported dynamic demand in both its divisions, as well as increased sales to €458 million in the first quarter of 2013. This corresponds to a growth of 6%, or 8% at local currency, compared to the prior-year-quarter.

Indena announced that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) released the documentary “Custodians of the Forest,” the first documentary about a successful example of sustainable management and corporate social responsibility program in the Prunus Africana. The documentary saw backing from Indena and other European companies committed to respecting and taking care of the world.

Evonik’s Tego Stemlastin was awarded a BSB Innovation Award in the naturals/actives category at in-cosmetics 2013. The BSB Innovation Award highlights the best finished goods and ingredients in four different categories. Each prize winner is selected by an international and independent jury that consists of industry professionals from leading players.

At NYSCC Suppliers' Day, The Lubrizol Corporation is highlighting its new Carbopol Ultrez 30 polymer, a high performance skin care solution for a broad pH range. Additionally, other exciting new products and solutions for personal care from Lubrizol that are on display at the event include: Complete. Advanced. Skin Care., which blends the science of polymers, molecular cosmetics and botanicals from Lipotec and Active Organics; a new shampoo formulation delivering color protection and care; sulfate-free and DEA replacement formulating solutions; and the "Beauty in the Digital Age" consumer trends presentation.

Also, at the upcoming FCE Cosmetique taking place May 15–17 in São Paulo, Brazil, The Lubrizol Corporation’s Personal and Home Care team will introduce Active Organics, Inc. to the South Latin American market, concentrating on Brazil. BASF is featuring its latest personal care technologies and market concepts in booth 301 at the NYSCC Suppliers’ Day event. BioAmber Inc. announced the pricing of its initial public offering of 8,000,000 units consisting of one share of common stock and one warrant to purchase half of one share of common stock at $10 per unit.

Lipo Chemicals promoted Selmo Araujo to managing director of Latin America for Vantage Specialty Chemicals. Araujo joined Lipo Chemicals in 2003, and has since led Lipo do Brasil. Over the past ten years, he has established an impressive record of performance in the region, building a strong and motivated team that drives a consistently profitable and growth-oriented business. With his new appointment, Araujo will bring market focus and accelerated growth to Lipo’s presence and prestige throughout Latin America. In addition to the continued development of Lipo and the Personal Care Group, MAraujo will also head the development of other Vantage Specialty Chemical businesses across the entire Latin American region.

AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry, Personal Care announced Dr. Magdalena A. Biernat and Rik Houben have joined the Surface Chemistry EMEIA group as technical project leaders for personal care applications. Dr. Biernat brings a strong background in biotechnology to her new position. Her responsibilities include leading projects focused mainly on cleansing and conditioning as well as serving as a personal care technical services team contact for EMEIA marketing and sales to AkzoNobel customers in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. In addition, she will partner with AkzoNobel’s global research, development and innovation groups and with the technical services team, and lead technical projects, global or local in scope. And Houben brings several years of international experience as a formulation chemist and product developer to his new position. As part of the personal care technical services team EMEIA, his responsibilities include developing new products and formulations, providing technical support, and leading projects to deliver results for EMEIA customers.

Micro Powders announced executive changes. Gary Strauss has assumed the role of president and COO, and Deena Strauss Kornblau has assumed the role of CEO and executive vice president. In his new role, Strauss will manage the day-to-day functions of the company and will oversee the financial and operational departments. As CEO, Strauss Kornblau will focus her attention on the growth of the company as well as overseeing the sales and marketing departments. Warren Pushaw, the former president of Micro Powders, will take on a new role as senior technical advisor. He will now focus most of his attention on the technology side of the business.

The Lubrizol Corporation hired Darcy Travagline as regional account manager in the U.S. West Coast for its Lipotec subsidiary, as part of its skin care strategy. Travagline´s primary responsibility will be the continual development of Lipotec peptides and marine-based cosmetic ingredients in the region, and she has broad experience as formulator for hair care and skin care products, as well as account manager representing specialty raw materials to the beauty industry.

New Launches

To counteract unattractive changes of the skin, Sederma developed Senestem, a high-tech active ingredient proven to fade signs of senescence (the process of deterioration with age) with an approach targeting the microRNAs. This micro approach leads to a visible macro embellishment: skin recovers its density, firmness and elasticity, age spots are lightened, and more.

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Company partnered with RML, Inc. in creating a new line of alternative preservatives called PolyGuard. The PolyGuard line features the proprietary ingredient Zemea propanediol. RML designed PolyGuard to capitalize on the ability of Zemea to boost preservative efficiency along with its lack of irritation in cosmetic and personal care products in combination with the natural preservative, e-polylysine, which is derived through the fermentation of bacteria. The PolyGuard line has two preservative blends. PolyGuard BA combines Zemea with other ingredients of natural origin—e-polylysine and benzyl alcohol—allowing for natural preservation in a safe and effective manner. PolyGuard CG draws on RML’s experience i producing caprylyl glycol-based preservative systems by combining Zemea, e-polylysine and RML’s domestically produced, pure caprylyl glycol. Beauty product developers should consider PolyGuard BA for preservation in their natural products, and PolyGuard CG provides devlopers with a preservative that is an alternative to parabens and formaldehyde releasers.

Salvona is introducing several new and advanced technologies in anti-aging, daily skin care and hair care at the 2013 NYSCC Suppliers’ Day. They include SalSphere Natural Anti-Aging encapsulated natural polyphenols, resveratrol (grapes) and procyanidin (apple), for antioxidant benefits and skin rejuvenation; SalSphere Anti-Aging Lift encapsulated collagen-building peptides for higher efficacy in wrinkle therapy and skin firming; MultiSal Retinol, stable and potent retinol for a younger-looking, healthy appearance; SalSphere Skin Smoothing for reduced blemishes, scar appearance and age spots with an ingredient that offers slow, long-lasting release of gentle and safe beta hydroxy acid to smooth and resurface skin; SalSphere Clear Skin, an ingredient that offers time release of alpha and beta hydroxy acids for the benefit of exfoliation and moisturization that yields youthful skin; HydroSal SalSilk, which aims to enhance the thickness and youthful appearance of hair; and SalSphere Healthy Scalp, for gentle daily scalp care.

Natural Sourcing added Karanja Oil to its growing line of specialty oils for use in beauty and personal care products. Native to India, Karanja Oil is pressed from the seeds of the pongam tree. The pongam is a fragrant, flowering tree that is considered a cousin to neem. Karanja Oil offers an array of similar therapeutic benefits to that of its pungent relative while offering a milder, pleasant aroma that is more versatile for use in cosmeceutical applications. Karanja Oil is highly recommended for inclusion in moisturizers and hair care products where emolliency is desired. In skin care, Karanja Oil is used to treat eczema, psoriasis, skin ulcers, dandruff and to promote wound healing.

Botanic Innovations introduced African Wild Watermelon seed oil. This ancestral wild watermelon citrullus lanatus, also known as Kalahari melon, originates from central Africa where it thrives in high heat and dry conditions yet retains high levels of water. It is recognized for antioxidant activity and for its water-holding properties, as well as for its elegant emollient feel. Grown exclusively for Botanic Innovations in Wisconsin using sustainable agricultural practices without use of herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizer, the watermelon seed oil is appropriate for applications in skin care and personal care products.

Clariant debuted the soft, velvety skin feel of its new Aristoflex Velvet for skin care formulations. This specially designed polymer takes moisturization and cleansing beyond functionality to create a luxurious, lasting experience that indulges the senses. Aristoflex Velvet is an EO-free and preservative-free ingredient that adds a soft and smooth skin feel to formulations during application and rub in. Its composition does not immediately break on skin when applied, but instead gently melts while applying to leave skin feeling evenly soft and moisturized. With Aristoflex Velvet, manufacturers of skin care products can achieve a superior sensory profile for creams, lotions, balms, milks and serums, from light to rich caring products for all skin types. Its broad usage spectrum from pH 3 – 8 makes it compatible with a wide range of preservatives, and it has a high compatibility with organic solvents, allowing special formulations such as tonics, hand sanitizers and nail polish removers with a soft, velvety, non-drying skin feel. Aristoflex Velvet also provides excellent suspending properties in a variety of products enabling the stabilization of colorful beads, exfoliating scrubs, microcapsules, sparkling pearls and shimmering particles, for example.

Jeen International introduced its patented Jeesperse Ice-T Instant Cold Emulsion Technology. Building on the Jeesperse Cold Process Wax products, the Jeesperse Ice-T series includes optimized powders that, when introduced into water at room temperature, rapidly form stable emulsions typically eliminating the use of traditional emulsifiers and allowing the addition of waxes into the system without heating. The resulting formulations provide exceptional aesthetics, product developer flexibility and related benefits to creams, lotions and hair care products. A wide range of natural and synthetic waxes can be incorporated into Jeesperse Ice-T along with various active ingredients, allowing a nearly unlimited number of potential wax melt point and formulation attributes. Gelest introduced a new material for its line of personal care silicones. SiQube Q1850 is a quaternary amine functional silicone resin with unique properties. It is a dry powder that is stable in aqueous solution, and it has a powerful cleansing and debriding ability, natural smooth skin feel, facilitates increased moisture binding, reduces the need for preservatives, naturalizes the skin and acts as an anti-static agent for hair and skin. It will be featured at Gelest’s booth at NYSCC Suppliers’ Day.
