Addae (at left), are collaborating to generate "substantiated product claims and formulations tailored to the unique requirements of the Black beauty category."Citruslabs/SULA LabsBeauty's challenge in serving the unique needs of Black consumers starts at the clinical stage: a historic lack of solid research and claims substantiation has led to products that simply do not meet the needs of people of color.

Efforts to right this wrong have included CeraVe's establishment of a fund at Howard University to help its faculty further their expertise and build the infrastructure needed to conduct clinical trials with a focus on skin of color, as well as supplier programs designed to assess technologies on a wide array of consumer types.

Now, research firm Citruslabs and inclusive R&D specialist Sula Labs, which is led by Black chemist A.J. Addae, are collaborating to generate "substantiated product claims and formulations tailored to the unique requirements of the Black beauty category."

Sula Labs will reportedly leverage Citruslabs' clinical research expertise to substantiate claims for its products, particularly for efficacy and safety.

By ensuring the development of wellness solutions tailored specifically for Black consumers, the partnership aims to better serve this $9.4 billion beauty market, which reportedly represents more than 10% of the total U.S. sector.

Furthermore, the partnership is intended to boost the representation of Black-owned beauty brands; per data cited by Citruslabs and Sula Labs, Black people represent 14.4% of the U.S. population, yet only 4-7% of beauty brands available in stores are owned by Black individuals.

As a result, cosmetic brands owned by Black entrepreneurs generate only 2.5% of the industry’s revenue, per the firms. This leads to dampened interest among venture capital players.

This new partnership will therefore "fill gaps in personal care products, ensuring effectiveness while specifically catering to the needs of people of color," per Citruslabs and Sula Labs.

Susanne Mitschke, CEO and co-founder of Citruslabs, said, "I am excited about our collaboration with SULA Labs. Together, we are setting a new standard in personal care, specifically addressing the unique needs of people of color. This partnership is more than a business venture; it's a commitment to inclusivity and scientific excellence in beauty and personal care."
