ICMAD Honors Young Designers

The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors Association (ICMAD) celebrated their annual Young Designers Competition, which took place at Twenty Four Fifth in New York City on September 21, 2011. Created in 1999, the ICMAD Young Designers Competition showcases the talents of students studying package design. The goal of the Young Designers competition is to encourage and develop future creative talent.

“Based on the work of the many talented students that participated in the ICMAD Young Designers competition, the work is truly inspiring and I foresee many bright futures ahead,” said Pam Busiek, president and CEO, ICMAD.

The participating schools in this year’s program were The American Academy of Art, Chicago; the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), Los Angeles; the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York; and the Miami International University of Art & Design, Miami. Each student received a 6.5 oz. bottle, which was donated by Jack Leitman, L&S Packaging. The students were asked to create any type of facial product, such as a toner, cleanser or moisturizer. They were also asked to create the overall brand identity, including product name, descriptive copy and net weights.

Judged by a panel of cosmetic and personal care packaging design experts, the criteria included overall uniqueness, capability to be reproduced economically and ability to stand out favorably against competitive packages. Ease of use and storage were also factors in judging.

The awards were presented to the students by Leslie Blodgett, creator of bareMinerals and executive chairman of Bare Escentuals. The beauty expert spoke about her experiences and how beauty is what’s inside and that can change the world. It only seemed apropos that she present these awards to the students who seek creativity and inspiration.
