Sustainability, Global Expansion, Sun, Skin and Hair Care, and More Beauty Ingredient News and Launches for Late February 2013

In the 2013 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations report from Corporate Knights, a Canadian media organization specializing in the area of corporate sustainability, Croda ranked it as the highest-placed U.K.-based company and at No. 25 in the world. The report, which is compiled annually by Corporate Knights, demonstrates Croda’s increased emphasis on sustainability and highlight the importance that it plays in the company’s ongoing strategy. This focus will continue to enhance the financial performance of the company, and deliver key environmental, social and governance benefits.

BioOrganic Concepts announced an expanded distribution geography deal with Essential Ingredients. Under the agreement, Essential Ingredients is the exclusive distributor of BioOrganic Concepts range of specialty natural ingredients to the Midwestern U.S. Essential Ingredients has been the exclusive distributor for BioOrganic Concepts in the Eastern U.S. since 2011.

Clariant opened its new AMPS polymers plant for the production of specialty polysulfonates at its facility in Tarragona, Spain. The new plant is the result of a two-year investment totaling around €16 million, brought about through Clariant’s recently completed Global Asset Network Optimization (GANO) project. It has led to the creation of 32 new jobs at the site. Two separate lines will make a range of polymers for the industrial and consumer specialties business unit, as well as the oil and mining services business unit. These include Hostacerin and Aristoflex emulsifiers and rheology modifiers for use in face creams.

Syntheon’s Synovea DOI, an ingredient used for skin hydration in beauty products that is obtained by a green chemical process using plant-based raw materials, has been given a full compliance certification from Ecocert. The ingredient’s origin of its raw materials and development process was reviewed by Ecocert and resulted in the full certification.

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Company announced the winner of its inaugural Zemea Innovation Award program—Knowlton Development Corp. (KDC), for its patented Natural Zea deodorant stick platform. According to DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products’ vice president of marketing and sales Steve Huff, “KDC started with targeted product claims built around the performance and sustainable attributes of Zemea, which has resulted in this innovative natural deodorant offering.”

Azelis launched a new headquarters in Shanghai for its Asia Pacific business, continuing to invest in its development and growth, including now having 30 personnel in sourcing, technical and commercial positions at the site. Additionally, the headquarters has two new in-house laboratories, with one dedicated to personal care, being commissioned, and Azelis is planning further recruitment during 2013 to meet demand. Also, to maintain its closeness to customers, the company just opened a regional office in Guangzhou and plan to open another in Beijing at the beginning of July 2013.

DianaPlantSciences announced the addition of Darren Gilbert as business development manager for North America. In this position, his responsibilities will include sales and marketing along with developing strategic alliances within the beauty and personal care and nutraceutical industries. A primary emphasis will be to introduce ingredients produced from plant cell culture technology, a sustainable, non-GMO method for producing whole-cell plant actives. Gilbert also will be responsible for launching new brands produced through plant cell culture technology, as well as developing partnerships with companies that seek to produce novel ingredients through a research and development partnership with DianaPlantSciences.

Adrianna Feyerherm joined the Lonza Personal Care team as a commercial marketing manager. Feyerherm will be responsible for driving and supporting new global product launches for the anti-dandruff and hair care product lines. She has more than six years’ experience at Lonza, where she has held positions of increasing responsibility, finally as the North American marketing manager, mass channel brands for the water treatment business. Her previous responsibilities were to manage the mass channel consumer pool and spa brands, including guiding the portfolio strategy and new product development for the brands and working with key customers.

BASF Personal Care is prepping innovations, presentations and new offerings to debut at the upcoming in-cosmetics 2013 event, where the company will launch the next level of its Care Creations brand. In the next phase, Care Creations will take an even closer look at real consumer life from a face-to-face perspective and seek to develop and offer new and different beauty products inspired by people’s diverse daily lives. Additionally, BASF will showcase a new skin care concept that comprises formulations that focus on anti-aging measures of prevention, maintenance and correction; a new broad-spectrum UV filter the covers the UVB and UVAII range from 290 to over 340 nm; a hair care ingredient for hair styling gels, creams and waxes with high performance styling and long-lasting curl retention with a smooth, crystal-clear gel base; an environmentally compatible conditioner compound that responds to the demand for hair care products based on natural substances;  a microemulsion derived exclusively from renewable raw materials for body cleansing products; a new range of natural mica titanium dioxide/iron oxide platelets with high color saturation; and a sea vegetal extract that visibly improves the under-eye area while also reducing dark circles and smoothing out fine lines.

Sederma debuted Beautifeye, one of the first active ingredients of its kind demonstrated to have a lifting action on the sagging upper eyelid. Beautifeye represents a noninvasive alternative to blepharoplasty, the surgical excision of the eye lid skin, and it uses a duel action approach to address the global contour of the eye. This includes lifting the fold of the lid at the top and lessening the crow’s feet wrinkles on the sides by strengthening the dermal structure and increasing its contractile properties, as well as fading dark circles and diminishing puffiness at the bottom lid by consolidating the microvascular network and reducing the pigmentation.

Additionally, Phytenso is a natural hair straightener that is proposed as an alternative to aggressive chemical relaxers. Phytenso fights frizz, locks out humidity and improves hair’s manageability.

Rahn’s moisturizer AquaRich, validated by Ecocert and COSMOS, offers a unique composition of black oat extract and lecithin to provide effective, long-lasting skin moisturizing properties. Additionally, new studies reveal AquaRich’s repair effects on hair, improving hair structure, gloss and bounce back, and also helping to prevent the formation of split ends. Suitable for any kind of skin, body and hair care products, AquaRich can be incorporated into gels, emulsions, shampoos and conditioners.

Chemsil Silicones introduced an active cationic emulsion for improved conditioning deposition in hair care applications. The emulsion, Emulsil CC-44, uses a preservative system that does not release formaldehyde and is paraben free, and it works to help hair care products offer improved conditioning, frizz control, softness and more. It can be included in shampoos, rinse-off and leave-in conditioners, hair colorants and styling aids.

IBR Ltd. launched IBR-Gapture 1101, an extract of jojoba leaf that improves skin structure and reduces water loss. It aids in increasing skin moisture and enhancing skin performance with improvement of the skin barrier, resulting from the decrease of dehydration (moisturizing) and improved skin integrity expressed in smoothing effects, and it can be included in skin care offerings.

Dow Consumer & Industrial Solutions is officially launching MoistStar HA+ Moisturizing Technology, an ingredient that benefits consumers with longer-lasting surface skin moisturization, as well as product developers with outstanding ability for cold processing at competitive cost levels, at the PCHi event in China. In addition to significantly improving moisturizing performance, MoistStar HA+ Moisturizing Technology also is a liquid, and therefore easier to handle and incorporate into skin care formulations than hyaluronic acid powder.
