U.S. prestige skin care grew about 14% in 2023, compared to about 11% in the mass category.

Skin care was the fastest-growing category in prestige beauty based on units sold, per Circana. The category was also one of only two mass sectors that grew based on unit sales (the other was makeup).

Top prestige performers included face serums and creams, body sprays, body lotions and creams, and body cleansers.

Notably, prestige skin care is gaining market share among 45-54-year-olds with a household size of four that includes children under 18 years old. Circana interprets this as a sign of increased interest in the category among teens and tweens, as reflected in a number of recent media reports.

From dermatologist-driven brands and product innovation to clean and natural-inspired products focused firmly on Gen Z, skin care in 2023 is being viewed through a health lens.

Given the momentum going into 2024, the question is: how can brands keep the momentum up in mass and prestige skin care?

Beauty Accelerate has 5 keys to meaningful, market-winning innovation.

1. Harness clinical expertise for inclusive innovation

About half of Black Americans feel skin care brands have a long way to go to ensure products work well for people of color, per a 2023 Aveeno poll.

Similar dissatisfaction has been witnessed in the multicultural hair care and makeup spaces. This is a dynamic that can be resolved by offering true efficacy to consumers, resulting in market opportunities for brands.

➡️"Inclusive Beauty: Product Design for Deeper Skin Tones," a briefing and innovation Q&A led by AJ Addae, founder of Sula Labs, will center on best practices for addressing the needs of deeper skin-toned consumers in product development.

From hair and skin care, to sunscreens and more, this Beauty Accelerate session will provide R&D and their marketing partners with the insights needed to ensure products effectively meet the needs of this massive, dissatisfied consumer base.

Addae is a cosmetic chemist, clinical researcher and chemical biology Ph.D. student at the University of California, Los Angeles.

When Addae was a clinical researcher and formulator in the medical-grade skin care space, she immediately saw how underserved and under-considered Black consumers are in the R&D process, and sought to build Sula Labs—a research-forward product development and testing laboratory that develops and tests products for Black-owned brands and dark-skinned consumers, with customers in retailers including Sephora, Credo Beauty and Ulta Beauty.

Addae's dermatologic research is published in the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology, and she is a Future Laboratory Future Innovators awardee. She is ultimately driven by her innate passion for using chemistry and clinical research as a means of change for the health of skin of color.

➡️Meanwhile, during "Building Breakthrough Products in Skin Care and Health through Diversity and Inclusion in Clinical Research," Lisa Goberdhan, clinical research aesthetician at Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, will discuss the importance of ethnicity, race and gender considerations for ingredient selection, preclinical testing of formulas and designing more inclusive clinical research studies that ultimately provide consistently effective products for a more diverse population.

Goberdhan's presentation will address how the understanding of dermatological issues impacting underrepresented or underserved groups can lead to better product innovation.

2. Focus on skin health & wellness

➡️During Beauty Accelerate's "Breakthrough Skin Health Innovators," experts from some of the category’s most unique voices and brands will discuss the power of clinical evidence, dermatological expertise, clean and natural formulations, and much more.

Among this session's experts will be Lisa Goodman, founder of the GoodSkin Clinics.

Since the opening of her first clinic in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in 2015, Goodman has helped thousands of clients, including a loyal following that includes some of today’s most recognizable faces, achieve healthier, youthful and more natural versions of themselves–what GoodSkin defines as “The Untouched Look."

Meanwhile, adding a data expert perspective, Anna Mayo of NIQ will dig into the latest market insights in the skin care sector, unveiling growth opportunities and shopper sentiments.

3. Harness senolytic & regenerative technologies for well-aging

Senolytic beauty technologies selectively clear senescent cells in the skin, offering a new pathway to well-aging.

➡️During "Age-Defying Beauty: How Senolytics are Transforming Skin Care," Brian Grady, senior marketing specialist, DSM-Firmenich, will focus on consumers' strong need for new, innovative, and sustainable skincare solutions.

Senolytics, a next generation approach in skin care, targets the root cause of skin aging, improving the skin’s overall health and appearance.

This pioneering approach to anti-aging functionality removes or prevents the buildup of senescent cells in the skin, leading to vibrant and healthy-looking skin for a much younger and rejuvenated appearance.

Grady is a market research and analysis expert and trusted trend specialist for DSM-Firmenich Personal Care N.A. He represents the company as a frequent speaker and panel member as well as contributing to industry publications.

His experience extends from skin care, sun care and biotechnology in personal care to pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and technology. Grady has also been the sustainability ambassador for the company's NA team since 2019, responsible for monitoring and reporting on the sustainability initiatives in the personal care industry.

Furthermore, he has written and presented on company initiatives at various industry events.

Grady holds a master's in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and a bachelor's degree in Management Science from Kean University. Additionally, he holds a certification for Driving Business towards the Sustainable Development Goals from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Meanwhile, a new technology that leverages detachable microneedles to deliver hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers to the superficial skin has been launched by Mineed Technology, which declares the innovation "a paradigm shift in skin rejuvenation."

This breakthrough will be the subject of a short-form briefing during Beauty Accelerate's Los Angeles debut.

According to Mineed Technology, studies have proven that hyaluronic acids, particularly larger-sized molecules, can remain in tissue for longer periods, not only instantly producing volume but also promoting cell proliferation.

Embedding these larger molecules is technically challenging, however, and requires a dermatologist with exceptional expertise.

In response, Mineed Technology has developed detachable microneedles (DMNs) that can enable the rapid self-administration of HA filler into the skin in 30 seconds.

The company's in vivo experiments reportedly revealed that the administration of large-size HA into the superficial skin resulted in a substantial increase in both collagen deposition and the proliferation of skin cells down into the dermis.

The outcomes observed in human volunteers were also optimistic, per Mineed Technology.

4. Deliver efficacy to support clean-ical claims

➡️The trend of science-driven, highly effective, and proven personal care products is having a significant impact on innovation in the industry, which will be the subject of "Elevated Efficacy," a forthcoming talk from Symrise Cosmetic Ingredients NA's Jennifer King.

King will discuss how consumers are increasingly seeking personal care products that not only make them look and feel good but also have scientific evidence to support their claims.

She will also explore how this shift toward "clean-ical" products, which combine the concepts of clean and clinical, is leading consumers to seek out formulas that are proven, effective and results-driven.

This is a must-attend session for any marketing or product development teams focusing on efficacy-centered R&D and marketing.

King is currently the Director of Marketing, Symrise Cosmetic Ingredients North America, based in the NYC area. She has more than 20 years expertise in global marketing, creative direction, design and a proven track record of trend forecasting in the beauty industry.

Prior to joining Symrise, King held marketing and design roles at Firmenich in the United States and United Kingdom. She has a BFA in Graphic Design from The College of New Jersey and a Masters in Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing and Management from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.
