Recently the FDA announced a proposed update to regulatory requirements for sunscreens in the United States that would reclassify TiO2 (titanium dioxide) and ZnO (zinc oxide) as GRASE (Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective) category I. Previously, none of the 16 currently marketed active ingredients were considered GRASE. This updated assessment of these mineral-based sunscreen active ingredients would help to eliminate confusion amongst sunscreen formulators and consumers alike.

Croda offers a range of metal oxide dispersions and powders under our SolaveilTM brand. The Solaveil Clarus range of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide actives possess a tightly controlled particle size distribution ensuring these provide true transparency on the skin while still maintaining excellent UV protection. The award-winning Solaveil SpeXtra TM range of titanium dioxide products allow for formulating high SPF, broad spectrum sun protection products using a single active ingredient. The Solaveil dispersions are available with different carrier fluids for formulation versatility, and our powders offer formulators alternatives when dry actives are needed, making these Solaveil metal oxide technologies very easy to use in wide range of personal care applications.

Ingredient-conscious consumers are driving the trend for suppliers to produce safe and more effective sunscreens with less harmful ingredients. Croda aims to promote sustainable, environmentally safe sun care ingredients by moving towards chemical free claims through the use of actives like TiO2 and ZnO for mineral only claims.
