“Clean Beauty” as a web search term has risen 85% since 2017, according to a Google Trends report . As millennials’ spending power continues to grow, and as more and more consumers are looking for cosmetic products containing natural ingredients that are sustainably and ethically sourced, the demand for sustainable ingredients with a unique story grows as well.

Following its success with the Argan program, BASF Care Creations developed an environmentally-friendly and socially-responsible production of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), an exotic fruit tree from Asia. The Rambutan program implements the first-ever certified organic orchards of rambutan in Vietnam. It capitalizes on every part of the fruit and tree to minimize waste and maximize the sources of income for the local farmers. The program aims to ensure Vietnamese workers involved in the production receive higher incomes and safer working conditions, as well as to foster more ecological agricultural practices

 NEW LAUNCHES

Using extracts from the rambutan fruit and tree, BASF developed three preservative-free, COSMOS-approved, cosmetic ingredients of 100% natural origin (ISO 16128) - two for skin and one for hair:

NEPHORIA®, an extract from the rambutan leaves, acts as a natural alternative to retinol. It supports natural collagen synthesis (Col1 x1.6), elastic fiber network (Emilin-1 x3, Fibulin-5 x1.8), and assists with lowering a master negative regulator of collagen homeostasis (CCN1 x0.4), thus contributing to increased skin elasticity and reduced appearance of wrinkles.

NEPHYDRAT®, an extract from the rambutan peel, provides measurable and perceivable benefits of increased skin hydration and a uniform, fresh complexion. It helps increase taurine transporter and taurine (+44% and +81%, respectively) for greater water retention, supports natural ceramide production (x1.2) and energizes the skin (adenosine triphosphate x27) for an optimal skin barrier function.

RAMBUVITAL®, an extract from the rambutan seeds, protects hair from pollution and improves its vitality, as well as increases scalp hydration. In vivo, the scalp was significantly more hydrated within one month (+31% vs placebo) and the hair appeared and felt visibly healthier and shinier.

BASF’s new rambutan program answers the 2020 beauty consumers’ concern: delivering powerful yet natural and organic active ingredients, driving the development of future cosmetic actives through up-cycling of different parts of the tree, while ensuring positive social and environmental impacts along the value chain.
