Global Cosmetic Industry spoke with beauty insiders to learn about the latest skin care ingredients that are resonating with consumers.

Multifunctional Products

Gabriela Meza Armenta, marketing and business development manager, Lignopure GmbH, says, “I am definitely interested in the growth of multifunctional products, cosmetic ingredients and the bigger role that sustainability is continuing to play in the cosmetic industry, which I think go hand in hand. When it comes to multifunctional products, I think innovation is allowing the creation of new game-changing natural ingredients with amazing multifunctional properties that can transform complex formulations into great gentler yet functional high-quality products.”

Armenta continues, “That being said, I don’t believe simple is synonymous with nonfunctional. On the contrary, to me, a simple and effective formula is the epitome of innovation, performance and respect for the skin’s pH and microbiome balance and the environment. This is also another amazing point about multifunctional products: the possibility of making our cosmetic consumption more sustainable. What I mean by this is that we can reduce the need to produce so many packaging materials by using fewer products with only one function. Also, by not having too many products, you decrease the likelihood of not using an already opened product before its expiration date. Subsequently, these products need to be disposed of for safety reasons, which translates into an inefficient way of using precious resources like water, energy and other amazing cosmetic ingredients. An added benefit of these products for the end consumer is that they simplify beauty routines thanks to the reduced number of products without sacrificing skin improvement and protection.”

She concludes, “We are launching a product line of three lignin-based ingredients called LignoBase. All three come from a material in plants called lignin, which is the biopolymer that gives plants their sturdiness and helps protect them against multiple external factors. Thanks to Lignopure’s patented particle technology, we have been able to upcycle this vital part of plants that is normally seen as waste and turn it into a fine multifunctional powder product line that transfers the natural properties of lignin into several different personal care and cosmetic formulations. Aside from the sustainable aspects of LignoBase, these plant-based ingredients offer multiple benefits like antioxidant and SPF boosting, while its natural brown tones also allow formulators to simplify their color formulation process for numerous finished products that need beige or brown pigments for skin care, sun care and color cosmetics. Further cosmetic-enhancing LignoBase properties are their mattifying effect and white cast-reducing effects, which prove to be very useful in formulations with SPF, especially in inclusive sun care products.”
