2024 Trends in Cosmetic Procedures: Eyelid Surgery Tops the List
Per a June 20 press release, the number of face and head procedures increased by 4.3% from the previous year, 2023, with more than 7.4 million procedures completed. Body and extremity procedures, on the other hand, saw a 14.8% decrease in procedures as face and head went up, with a total of six million procedures performed. Eyelid surgery, in particular, was the top procedure in 2024.
About 2.1 million eyelid surgeries were performed, replacing liposuction as the most common surgical procedure for the first time compared to previous years. Liposuction became the second most common procedure, followed by breast augmentation, scar revision and rhinoplasty.
The liposuction decline comes amid a boom in GLP-1 treatments, which have significant impacts on body shape. So, while the procedure may be in decline, body contouring post-GLP-1 usage is overall increasingly popular, per Allergan.
Rhinoplasty and breast procedures saw decreases compared to previous years. Rhinoplasty decreased by 10% at one million procedures completed in 2024, and breast procedures decreased by 14.1% at 3.9 million performed. However, fat grafting saw a 19.2% increase, a total of .9 million conducted.
Top Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures of 2024: Botulinum Toxin, Fillers, and More
As non-surgical procedures remain more sought out than surgical interventions by over three million, botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid filler, hair removal, non-surgical skin tightening and chemical peels were among the most popular in 2024. Botulinum toxin remained the most common non-surgical procedure for both men and women–a total of 7.8 million performed–among all age groups, specifically those aged 35–50, per the release. Hyaluronic acid procedures increased by 5.2% at 7.8 million treatments conducted.
Top Cosmetic Procedures by Gender and Age Group
Looking at women specifically, although liposuction wasn't the most popular overall, it is, however, still the most common surgical procedure for this demographic, followed by eyelid surgery and breast augmentation. Eyelid surgery for men, however, was again the most popular surgical procedure, followed by gynecomastia and scar revision.
Liposuction and non-surgical fat reduction were popular procedures across all age groups for women. However, breast augmentations were most common among women aged 18-34, accounting for 54% of patients. Similarly, 60.1% of rhinoplasty patients and 48.4% of those undergoing external genital surgery also fell within this age range.
