While consumers are increasingly demanding sustainable cosmetic packaging, they also expect new formats and product experiences. In fact, a 2023 Euromonitor analysis noteda, "More sophisticated innovation centering around sustainability will be increasingly important to the major developed markets of Western Europe and North America." In response, packaging specialists have launched a wide range of packaging innovations across categories that deliver on enhanced product experiences and branding, as well as sustainable credentials. Here, we present a few of the latest examples.
A Premiumized & Infinitely Recyclable Lipstick Case
The stock design comprises an 11 mm cup with guided mechanism ideal for soft formulas that combine a sheer tint of color with skin-friendly ingredients.
Furthermore, the lipstick pack is easily and infinitely recyclable due to its 100% aluminum content.
That aluminum construction also protects even softer formulations, while presenting a sleek, tactile high-end image, per HCP.
The aluminum casing can be anodized for a range of finishes and colors and decorated via laser etching, double anodizing, embossing, rolling or pressing.
The Harmony Luxe Trimline Lipstick is available in PIR and PCR aluminum for the cap and base, depending on MOQ.
2” Disc Top Lite Cuts Weight by 23%, Reduces Plastic Usage
Aptar Closures has launched 2” Disc Top Lite, a lightweight, eco-friendly disc top closure for beauty, personal care and home care applications featuring medium-to-thick viscosities.
The design features a low-profile design that is 23% lighter than conventional 2-inch disc top closures.
The lighter design requires far less plastic compared to other designs and is available in polypropylene (PP), including post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.
The 2” Disc Top Lite features a crab claw closure and is produced in a 24 mm custom thread neck finish with a 3 mm x 8.5 mm orifice.
The design is available in a variety of frost and gloss finishes; brands can customize the closure with logos or other marketing messages, per Aptar.
“At Aptar Closures, we are constantly seeking ways to innovate while minimizing our environmental footprint,” says Erin Harmon, North America product line director at Aptar Closures. “The 2” Disc Top Lite is a prime example of how we can deliver on both sustainability and functionality, providing our customers with a premium solution that supports their sustainability initiatives without sacrificing quality.”
Collapsible Boxes Offer Luxury & Sustainability
Rissmann has launched a range of monomaterial collapsible rigid boxes comprising cardboard and paper (FSC) with luxury-oriented finishes, which can be delivered flat.
The boxes can reportedly be set up easily and can feature various fastener designs, including paper ribbons.
Deco options include printing, laser engraving and cutting, hot stamping, and de/embossing.
The collapsible design is said to cut transport, storage volumes and costs of empty packaging.
Furthermore, Rissmann produces the boxes in Asia, Europe and the Americas to ensure supply chain efficiencies.
A New Versatile Refillable Dispensing System
Baralan's Premium Re-charge System comprises a refillable plastic dispenser designed to fit two types of inner glass containers to suit makeup and skin care formulations.
One of these inner glass containers is 131 mm tall with a 34.5 mm diameter. It is reportedly suitable for 30 ml DEA e ERA bottles and appropriate for all skin care and makeup applications, per Baralan.
It is also compatible with both airless and non-airless dispensing systems.
The Premium Re-Charge System was designed to preserve the hygiene of formulations and ensure easy replacement inside the main plastic container.
The system features a large and linear external surface to accommodate an array of colors and decorations to meet brands' needs. And, through reuse, the system supports the prevention of plastic entering the waste stream over multiple uses.
