A collaboration between Henkel and Ardagh has shown that in high volume packaging production, improving process engineering systems can lead to greater sustainability in beauty products.

Ardagh developed “the world’s lightest three-piece steel aerosol container” for Henkel’s hairspray products, which include Schwarzkopf Drei Wetter Taft. Manufactured by Ardagh’s specialist aerosol plant, the can’s dimensions of 0.13 mm wall thickness and 250 ml volume allow for a 15% saving in both materials and water used in production.

“The Drei Wetter Taft hair spray aerosol can is an excellent example of a sustainable packaging innovation. In collaboration with Ardagh Group, we reduced the thickness of the metal can while increasing its rigidity, resulting in a saving of over 15% of the material and water used in the production phase,” said Henkel innovation and sustainability manager Philippe Blank. “As a result, we can save a total of up to 3,500 metric tons of CO2 and up to 900,000 cubic meters of water every year.”
