The hair and skin care longevity race is heating up, tapping into the latest AI diagnostic platforms, emerging ingredients and product innovation. These were the focus of a L’Oréal Groupe presentation as part of Le Visionnaire in Paris this month.

The focus on longevity signals a continuing shift of focus toward the root causes of aging, particularly cellular activity, communication and inflammation.

L’Oréal’s Innovations in Longevity Science for Skin and Hair

L’Oréal’s integrative longevity approach is founded on advances in diagnostics and research, including the "Wheel of Longevity for Beauty," developed based on 40-plus scientific publications, which focus activities on nine hallmarks of aging.

(The number of targets varies depending on the research group, with some sources flagging 12 or more aging hallmarks.)

These hallmarks have been decoded using the company's Longevity AI Cloud, which "analyzes over 260 skin longevity biomarkers" to uncover the many factors shaping skin and hair vitality and youthfulness.

In addition, L'Oreal has developed Cell BioPrint in cooperation with NanoEntek, which measures longevity biomarkers to give consumers a better picture of their skin aging.

Meanwhile, L’Oréal’s work with epigenetics expert Tru Diagnostic is allowing the company to better understand the links between epigenomic markers and "beauty indicators" to advance longevity-focused innovation "from within."

L'Oréal Partners with Biotech Firms to Advance Skin Longevity and Sustainability

To address the hallmarks of aging uncovered via research and diagnostics, L'Oreal is working with biotech company Timeline, developer of Mitopure, a molecule that reportedly recycles and rejuvenates aging mitochondria.

L’Oréal has also taken a minority stake in the Chinese biotech firm Veminsyn Biotech (aka Weiming Shiguang) to co-develop sustainable longevity bioactive ingredients for cosmetics and promote their production. The partnership will harness Veminsyn’s molecular design and biomanufacturing capabilities to advance sustainable and open innovation.

L'Oreal Advances Longevity Skin Care with New Products and Global Research Partnerships

On the product front, L'Oreal has launched numerous longevity-focused SKUs.

This includes Lancôme's Absolue Longevity Soft Cream, which uses PDRN technology to boost cellular energy and extend skin's youth, as well as Vichy's Neovadiol Longevity Revolumizing Cream, which combines Longevisia Technology with ingredients like Proxylane, NAD+ Booster and Sliab's Senevisium to address aging at its root and rejuvenate mature skin.

L'Oreal is also partnering with researchers, including with biotech firm Senisca, which "will harness their expertise and proprietary technology to reprogram aged ‘senescent’ cells."

It will also work with a range of researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Uppsala University (Sweden), Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and University of California at San Diego, as well as David Luu, MD, a longevity tech entrepreneur.

L’Oréal Pioneers the Future of Beauty and Longevity with Integrative Science

“Longevity is a scientific and societal paradigm shift," said Barbara Lavernos, deputy chief executive officer in charge of research, innovation and technology, L’Oréal Groupe. "At L’Oréal, we envision a future where beauty and longevity are seamlessly intertwined as skin health is quintessential to add life to years with vibrant healthy aging. Because the beauty industry has a unique opportunity to contribute to healthy aging, we are committed to leading the way thanks to our L’Oréal Longevity Integrative Science”.

“Biological age is the new truth!" said Vania Lacascade, chief innovation officer, L’Oréal Groupe. "Moving beyond chronological age as the sole defining factor. It’s your biology–and your choices–that define your beauty journey. L'Oréal Longevity Integrative Science empowers you to design your unique, lifelong skin health journey–preventing, regenerating, or embracing the marks of time, at every age.”
