Spate's latest report on U.S. consumer search trends within beauty indicates an increased interest in lip shimmer, powder sunscreen and bakuchiol. The trends are reflective of the approaching summer and continue the consumer preference for hybrid makeup products.

There are 3.6K average monthly searches in the United States for lip shimmer, a growth of 805.2% since last year with three market leaders: Burt’s Bees, Eos, and Nivea. Related searches include lip gloss, lip balm, rose gold, champagne, peony, cherry, grapefruit, nude, sheer, SPF, plumper, swatch, natural and pink.
Spate reports that lip products are experiencing a similar trend to other makeup categories—the inclusion of SPF in everything. Lip sunscreen searches increased 30.2% since last year. Spate refers to the trend as “skinification” as skin care and makeup hybrid products become increasingly popular.
Another summer trend is powder sunscreen, which gets 22.8K average monthly searches, a growth of 29.5% since last year with 10 market leaders: Tarte, Supergoop!, Colorescience, Bareminerals, Peter Thomas Roth, Derma E, Physician’s Formula, Clinique, Jane Iredale and Isdin. Related searches include mineral, foundation, compact, translucent, pressed, brush, protection, sheer, zinc oxide, scalp, glowing, radiant and talc-free.
There are 4.0K average monthly searches for bakuchiol serum, a retinol alternative that is increasingly popular for being more tolerable on sensitive skin. Searches have grown 24.5% since last year with two market leaders: Bybi Beauty and Herbivore Botanicals. Related searches include retinol, alternative (to retinol), smoothing, pads, review, Sephora and Ulta. The top concerns searched alongside retinol are acne (34.3K), wrinkles (20.1K), aging (7.2K) and scarring (6.6K).
