Beauty is definitely back.
The break-neck pace of the shows made it challenging in the moment to identify new and unique trends; but now, having had a moment to breathe, I can share some of the key themes I noticed across the two shows. Highlights included:
- Sensitive skin solutions: gentle alternatives to harsh actives and new delivery systems to minimize skin reactivity
- Hair wellness innovation: thermal protectants and scalp balance technologies
- Neuro beauty: materials that impart a sense of well-being by, for example, boosting the release of beta-endorphins, oxytocin, etc.
- Simplified beauty: tapping multifunctional ingredient tech that does more with less
- Beauty tech: the use of AI in ingredient discovery and validation and beyond
- Efficacy: clinical results are front-and-center as new ingredients are introduced to the market, reflecting consumer demands for expert-backed, derm-inspired beauty
- Claims on the rise: biodegradability, China-compliant, non-food feedstocks, etc.
- Anti-aging evolution: a new focus on skin longevity and the healthspan, optimizing cellular functions, cycling out senolytic cells, etc.
- Green/clean functional alternatives: case in point, sensory modifiers that provide optimal textures and skin feel with a cleaner, greener profile
- New frontiers in biotech: biotech/synthetic biology/fermentation were everywhere this year, with a notable uptick in vertical farming programs and the use of botanicals as ingredient bio-factories
- Less problematic makeup ingredients: case in point, natural pigments
This is just a fragment of the trends we witnessed at the shows this year. Our coverage of the latest innovations spans reports in our Marcha, Aprilb, Mayc and June (this month's issue), as well as the forthcoming July/Augustd edition.
Key trends outlined in these reports include pigmentation, mood-based beauty, acne care, sustainable alternatives and more. Collectively, they paint a picture of an industry on an innovation upswing.
Happy reading.
