schülke introduced ethylhexylglycerin to the personal care industry in 1991 as sensiva® SC 50. It was initially introduced as a substitute for triclosan in deodorant products. Ethylhexylglycerin reliably inhibits the growth and multiplication of odor-causing bacteria, while at the same time leaving beneficial skin flora unaffected. It has also been shown to improve the efficacy of many traditional preservatives and other multifunctional materials. Paired with phenoxyethanol in euxyl® PE 9010, ethylhexylglycerin produces a broad-spectrum, liquid preservative system that is globally approved and can substitute directly for phenoxyethanol/parabens blends in the finished product.
This same boosting effect can be seen when ethylhexylglycerin is combined with other multifunctional materials. One such material, phenethyl alcohol, is known to have antimicrobial properties. It occurs widely in nature and can be found in many essential oils, including rose, carnation and hyacinth. It is also used as a fragrance component, and has a mild rose odor. Other properties make it an excellent choice to help maintain the microbiological stability of personal care formulas. These properties are boosted in sensiva® PA 20 by pairing phenethyl alcohol with ethylhexylglycerin.
Most recently, schülke has extended this family of products to include euxyl® K 900. In this latest product, the support of ethylhexylglycerin is used to boost the antimicrobial activity of another aromatic alcohol, benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol is naturally occurring in a variety of plants, including jasmine, hyacinth and ylang-ylang. It lends a mild, almond fragrance to products. It is also well-known for its mild anesthetic properties. The combination with ethylhexylglycerin gives benzyl alcohol the broad spectrum needed to make euxyl® K 900 a perfect preservative for eye-area products where the reduction of sting potential is important.
