NielsenIQ’s "2023 Sustainable Beauty" report finds that compostable and plastic-free products are driving dollar growth, while searches for refillable packaging have spiked.

Notably, the firm reported that "62% of consumers find sustainability more pivotal today than two years ago," with 61% believing sustainability should benefit the planet, while 57% and 54%, respectively, believe it should preserve natural resources and reduce pollution.

On the ingredient front, top sustainability-related claims driving dollar growth include cruelty-free (up 18.1%), compostable (up 30.9%) and plastic free (up 12.2%).

The report adds that while many consumer prefer nature-derived ingredients, brands and supply chain partners may be challenged to harvest these materials at scale without negative environmental impacts. Transparency will be critical. 

In packaging, meanwhile, beauty has experienced a 64% increase in searches for refillable options, per NielsenIQ, impacting sectors such as color cosmetics, deodorants and skin care.
