Mastercard Spending Pulse has announced that 2019 holiday retail sales increased by 3.4% compared to 2018.
The report analyzed holiday shopping between November 1 and December 24, 2019.
Steve Sadove, senior advisor for Mastercard, stated, "E-commerce sales hit a record high this year with more people doing their holiday shopping online. Due to a later than usual Thanksgiving holiday, we saw retailers offering omnichannel sales earlier in the season, meeting consumers’ demand for the best deals across all channels and devices."
The report stated:
- 2019 e-commerce sales grew 18.8% compared to 2018, which saw the growth rate reach 18.4%.
- Holiday e-commerce sales made up 14.6% of total retail.
- The e-commerce share of overall retail spend reached 15.4% on Black Friday.
- The e-commerce share of overall retail spend reached 24.5% on Cyber Monday.
