Celebrity makeup artist Kim Borio is also the CEO and founder of Glycelene, a vegan eco-ethical brand comprising natural and organic ingredients. She developed the brand with the assistance of her cosmetic chemist husband, Eric Borio, who works out of Borio Labs in Dana Point, California.
The brand’s first launch was The Beauty Ointment, a breathable, wax-free anti-aging product that had all the benefits of petroleum-based balms, without the performance and ecological drawbacks.
The Beauty Ointment can be applied on the face, around the eyes, to the lips, neck and to any abrasions—without any ill effect, according to the company. The balm hydrates by pulling moisture from the air, Kim Borio explained.
The Cucumber Cleansing Water is a water-thin emulsion that can remove marker and makeup from the skin.
The product range grew to include the Femme De Rose lip remedy, which comprises essential oils and rose wax for AM/PM car; an organic aromatherapy line; the anti-inflammatory and alcohol-free Seatox Mist, which contains dragon’s blood extract; vitamin C-rich Stem C mist for skin brightening; Neroli Nectar anti-oxidant boost; and Cucumber Cleansing Water, a water-thin emulsion that can remove marker and makeup from the skin yet is gentle enough to be applied around the eyes for de-puffing, while also reducing sebum without hindering moisturization.
Glycelene’s anti-aging Chardonnay Body Butter contains Chardonnay grape seed oil to soften and hydrate the skin, while the Golden Ice Globes reduce puffiness and the appearance of redness in the skin after waxing, electrolysis, peels and other procedures through the application of the cold glass to the skin.
The brand has also introduced The Eczema Ointment, which the Borios say is a big seller.
The brand has also introduced The Eczema Ointment, which the Borios say is a big seller. The ointment contains sorghum for the reduction of skin irritation, particularly eczema-related psoriasis and flaky patchy skin.
As for what’s next for the brand, Glycelene will be launching an edible probiotic lip scrub containing rose petal wax with a mint julep flavor. In addition, the brand is introducing a muscle gel that can be used with the brand’s Golden Ice Globes.
In addition to its own products, the Borios have formulated custom collections for specific spas and resorts to enhance their offerings. All of the products are hand labeled by the Borios, evoking the brand’s apothecary-chic ethos.
Glycelene launched online and at Naimie’s Beauty Center in Los Angeles, where many celebrity makeup artists shop. The store was ideal for bringing the brand to the attention of high-profile consumers.
Meanwhile, Glycelene expanded into high-end spas and resorts like Meadowood Napa Valley and The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. The company hosts a training center at its Dana Point lab to educate spa professionals on new treatments.
According to Kim Borio, the nature-inspired brand’s consumers are roughly split evenly between men and women.
