Leveraging microalgae and biotech expertise, Algaktiv has launched a "breakthrough" hair care active: Algaktiv Densidyl, which in vitro and clinical testing show effectively combats hair loss and graying caused by both environmental and emotional stress. According to Algaktiv, this is the first cosmetic ingredient developed to target both the emossome (emotional stressors), through cortisol and melatonin modulation, and the exposome, through the control of external aggressors.

Dual Microalgae Emossome, Exposome Actions

Algaktiv Densidyl (INCI: Water (Aqua) (and) Propanediol (and) Chlorella Emersonii Extract (and) Lecithin (and) Spirulina Maxima Extract (and) Ascorbic Acid (and) Tocopherol) achieves these effects by combining the potent properties of two microalgae to protect and rejuvenate hair follicles.

  1. The antioxidant action of phycocyanin from Spirulina maxima. According to the company, this blue pigment activates the NRF2 pathway, enhancing the hair’s antioxidant defenses and protecting against oxidative stress and environmental damage.
  2. The stress-modulating effects of xanthophylls from Chlorella emersonii. These pigments are reported to inhibit cortisol levels by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor. They also boost melatonin activity by modulation melatonin receptor 1A, countering the harmful effects of stress on hair follicles and promoting cellular repair.

The actives are encapsulated in a pharma-grade delivery system for stronger performance, per the company, providing a comprehensive and holistic 360-degree shield against both environmental and emotional stressors.

Anti-hair Loss Findings In vitro

In terms of hair stimulation, after seven days, cultured human hair follicles treated with Alkative Densidyl demonstrated a four-fold increase in hair length compared with epidermal growth factor, the company reports. It also showed a two-fold increase compared with the pharma reference molecule Minoxidil.

Anti-hair Loss Clinical Findings

A five-month clinical study in a panel of 50 volunteers — both men and women suffering from stress-related hair loss — showed a 25.9% increase in anagen hairs (in the growth phase) and an 11.43% increase in hair density, representing an average of 10,200 new hairs, after treatment with 2% Algaktiv Densidyl.

Anti-graying and Scalp-moisturizing Clinical Findings

Volunteers also experienced a significant reduction in gray hair with 2% Algaktiv Densidyl, visibly improving natural color, as well as enhanced scalp health overall; notably, the product increased scalp moisturization by 26.7%.
