AAK Personal Care has introduced Lipex SheaLuxe TR, a shea-derived emollient ester positioned as a sustainable alternative to non-volatile silicones in light skin and hair formulations; especially those for skinification of hair, anti-frizz and glass hair trends. The ingredient offers a soft, silky texture with a non-greasy after-feel, making it ideal for leave-on applications, per the company.
Functional Benefits Comparable to Dimethicone
Lipex SheaLuxe TR (INCI: Ethyl Oleate and Ethyl Stearate) exhibits sensory characteristics similar to low molecular weight dimethicone, including comparable viscosity, spreadability and a lightweight feel during and post-application. According to AAK, trials have demonstrated its efficacy in providing key benefits aligned with leading trends such as moisture retention, anti-frizz performance and long-lasting shine under varying environmental conditions.
A sensory evaluation by trained experts found no significant differences between Lipex SheaLuxe TR and dimethicone, with both described as light, dry, highly spreadable and non-greasy, the company reports.
Additional benefits include:
- Short- and long-term reductions in TEWL,
- A visible anti-soaping effect,
- Miscibility with plant-based oils and butter, and
- Compatibility and miscibility with ethanol, making it suitable for sun care oils.
Sustainable, Climate Compensated and Traceable
As AAK explains, Lipex SheaLuxe TR is formulated for sustainability using an eco-friendly process involving low temperatures, non-toxic catalysts and 100% renewable resources. As a readily biodegradable ingredient, it addresses environmental concerns posed by dimethicones.
The product is sourced through AAK's Kolo Nafaso program, which engages large networks of women shea collectors across several West African countries. This initiative fosters direct trading partnerships, provides micro-credits and supports socio-economic and environmental development within the communities.
Lipex SheaLuxe TR also stands out as a climate-compensated ingredient. The carbon footprint from its production, covering all stages from shea collection to factory gate, is offset with Fairtrade and Gold Standard carbon credits. This offset program, operated in Burkina Faso, further enhances its sustainable profile by funding energy-saving cookstove projects while supporting community-level climate resilience.
Meeting Market Demands for Sustainable, Ethical Solutions
Lipex SheaLuxe TR aims to offer brands a high-performance natural alternative to dimethicones, aligning with consumer demand for sustainable, effective and ethically sourced ingredients. Its multifunctionality and supply chain transparency position it as a versatile solution for innovative skin and hair care formulations.
