Muhammed Majeed, Ph.D., founder and chairman of the Sami-Sabinsa Group, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family following complications from surgery. His daughter, Anju Majeed, Ph.D., succeeds him as chairperson of the company.

Majeed was born and raised in Kerala, India, and after graduating in the pharma field from Kerala University, in 1975, he emigrated to the United States. He continued his graduate studies at Long Island University, NY, for his master's, and St. John's University, NY, for his doctorate, specializing in industrial pharmacy.

Majeed had more than 45 years of research experience in the industry, including roles with Pfizer Inc., Carter-Wallace and Paco Research. He founded Sabinsa Corp., a research-oriented pharmaceutical and nutraceutical marketing company, in 1988. In 1991, Majeed set up the Sami Labs Ltd. research group in Bangalore, India, which combines manufacturing and global marketing of nutraceuticals and fine chemicals with cutting-edge research; the company additionally has won many awards.

Majeed received awards from several Indian-American groups. He also received the 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year award by the National Federation of Asian Americans. In 2021, Majeed received an honorary title and award as "Father of the Indian Nutraceuticals Industry," during the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India's (ASSOCHAM's) virtual conference.

"Dr. Majeed was a kind and insightful person, with great business aptitude and scientific intellect," said Rachel Grabenhofer, managing scientific editor, Cosmetics & Toiletries. "I was so fortunate to visit the company's headquarters in early 2019, where he welcomed me to his office to share his visions for the company and insights on nutricosmetics, especially. His passing is another great loss to the industry, and he'll be missed."

Responding to his passing, Sabinsa issued the following statement:

It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a true visionary and our beloved Founder & Chairman, Dr. Muhammed Majeed, of the Sami-Sabinsa Group. Dr. Majeed, a pioneer in the nutraceutical industry, passed away peacefully on March 13th, surrounded by his family and close friends. His departure marks the end of an era, but his legacy will forever illuminate the path of innovation and excellence he has laid before us.

He was a strong leader and mentor to many and will be remembered for his strength, courage, intellect, and kind nature. His funeral will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, in Bangalore, India. We pray Almighty to give us the strength to deal with this irreplaceable loss of our beloved Founder.
