BASF has successfully obtained a new cosmetic ingredient notification for its Symbiocell product in China. This pre-market approval is mandated for cosmetic ingredients used for the first time in the Chinese market.

Symbiocell (INCI: Water (Aqua) (and) Butylene Glycol (and) Cestrum Latifolium Leaf Extract (and) Xanthan Gum (and) Propanediol (and) Caprylyl Glycol) is an active ingredient designed to soothe sensitive skin and mitigate excessive cutaneous reactions. It was developed in response to growing consumer demand for sensitive skin care solutions, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Healing Properties of Symbiocell

According to BASF, the primary component of Symbiocell, Cestrum latifolium, is a tropical plant known for its healing properties that has traditionally been used for various skin concerns. The ingredient has been shown in vitro to support healthy basal expression levels of the protein CD86 in skin dendritic cells. This action contributes to the reduction of skin sensitivity and reactivity.

Clinically Validating Skin Benefits

Symbiocell was evaluated in a double-blind clinical study of 31 women who, over three weeks, applied a face care formula containing 2% Symbiocell to one side of the face and a benchmark product to the other. Results showed a significant 62% reduction in cutaneous discomfort with the test active, compared with a 58% reduction by the benchmark.

In subjects' facial skin, the side treated with Symbiocell also:

  • decreased stinging test scores by 20%, outperforming the benchmark's 14% reduction,
  • comforted and soothed skin in 97% of participants, with 90% noting reduced skin irritation, and
  • improved skin's defenses against external aggressors in 87% of subjects.

Supporting Sensitive Skin Needs in Asia-Pacific

The ingredient's notification in China is said to underscore BASF’s commitment to addressing sensitive skin challenges in the Asia-Pacific market. What's more, it exemplifies the company’s pursuit of sustainable, effective personal care solution, aligning with the Care Chemicals division’s Care 360° initiative.
