Carbios, a company specializing in new bio-industrial solutions to reinvent the lifecycle of plastic and textile polymers, has developed a novel enzyme that has the potential to efficiently convert plastic waste into new bottles.

Carbios has announced the publication of an article titled “An Engineered PET-depolymerase to Break Down and Recycle Plastic Bottles,” in the scientific journal Nature. The article was co-authored by scientists at Carbios and the company’s academic partners at Toulouse Biotechnology Institute.

According to the article, Carbios’ novel enzyme can biologically depolymerize all polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste, followed by an efficient process of recycling the waste into new bottles. Carbios’ recycling process is reportedly the first of its kind and may initiate a real transition to a circular economy that can better prevent plastic pollution from harming the oceans and planet.

The technology also paves the way for recycling PET fibers, another major challenge in guaranteeing a clean and protected environment for future generations, the company stated.
