Nielsen Data: How Cannabis Is Impacting OTC Products

As CBD products continue to explode within the beauty scene, the health and wellness market—specifically over-the-counter (OTC) products—is also embracing the reported healing benefits of cannabis. 

According to Nielsen, many consumers find hemp-derived CBD helpful in providing relief for a wide range of symptoms, including chronic pain, anxiety and trouble sleeping.

OTC/RX Treatment Among Cannabis-interested Adults

  • Headaches/migraines: 88%
  • Back/neck pain: 64%
  • Arthritis pain: 63%
  • Feminine pain: 61%
  • General aches and pains: 59%
  • Inability to fall asleep: 56%
  • Cancer pains: 52%
  • Motion sickness: 48%
  • Smoking Cessation: 19%.

Nielsen also found: 

  • Seventy percent of adults who are interested in cannabis and who treat their ailment with OTC/Rx medications say they would consider treating with cannabis because of the perception that it’s more effective than OTC/Rx alternatives;
  • Sixty-seven percent perceive cannabis to be healthier than OTC/Rx medications;
  • Sixty-nine percent are influenced by the perception that cannabis is more natural than OTC and Rx alternatives; and
  • Just under 50% of adults currently treating an ailment with OTC/Rx medications would consider cannabis as a treatment because they perceive it to be cheaper/more cost effective.
